A Necessary Scar

Competition: Buildner Concrete Pavilion 2026

Brief: International competition challenging designers to explore the sensory, spatial, and expressive potential of concrete through a small-scale public pavilion.

Site: Slite limestone quarry, Gotland, Sweden

Typology: Exhibition Pavilion

Software: Rhino 8, Grasshopper, Blender, Adobe CC

A Necessary Scar is a concrete pavilion carved into the limestone quarry edge at the cement plant in Slite, Sweden, exposing the origins of the material that shape contemporary construction. Positioned directly along the main road into Slite, the pavilion is designed to capture the curiosity of bypassers and transform an industrial landscape into a public space for learning and reflection.

The project responds to concrete’s paradoxical role as both an essential construction material and a source of environmental concern. Rather than concealing this tension, the pavilion exposes it. The architecture appears as a controlled incision in the landscape, where the ground is peeled upward to reveal the limestone beneath. Walls, stairs, ramps, and seating are excavated rather than added, allowing visitors to experience the “scar” left by extraction.

Rough, rock-like walls contrast with the smooth double-curved roof and polished concrete flooring, demonstrating concrete’s versatility. Framed views overlook the quarry’s daily operations, while integrated information panels explain concrete production, its environmental impacts, alternative mixes, and emerging innovations in cement technology. Constructed using locally sourced high-performance concrete, A Necessary Scar transforms extraction into awareness and public engagement.
